Quick & Easy Dutch Apple Pie

Dutch apple pie is a variation of traditional apple pie but is distinguished by its crumb topping instead of a typical top crust. It combines the structure of a classic pie with the texture and flavor of an apple crisp. Other names for this decadent dessert include Apple Crumb Pie, Apple Crumble Pie, and even Apple Crisp. I’m not entirely sure why anyone would call this pie Apple Crisp, because it’s usually make in a baking pan not a pie plate.

There are numerous variations of the Dutch apple pie. These include using different types of fillings added to the apples. Regional versions such as the Pennsylvania Dutch apple pie may include cream or custard in the filling. Regardless of the version you’re making, all versions of this pie will most likely be served with ice cream or whipped topping.

This quick and easy recipe uses canned apple pie filling so there’s no need to decide which type of apples to use. If you’re not a fan of canned pie filling then try our Classic Dutch Apple Pie Recipe. Quick and easy recipes are formulated to save time, normally by using store-bought crusts and canned or powdered pie fillings.

If there is a trick to creating a perfect Dutch apple pie it’s to focus on the topping. The butter should be cold or even frozen. Do not use your hands to mix the topping. Use a pastry cutter or fork to blend everything together. Butter is very sensitive to temperature. If you use your hands to mix the topping, the heat from your hands will cause the butter to melt. This will cause the other flour and brown sugar to clump together and harden as the pie bakes.
